Question 88333: Ok, I'm working with a complex rational expression, so I'll try and write it in here so that you can understand how it looks on paper.
I have to simplify this complex rational equation:
3/(x-5) + 1 over 1- 4/(x-5)

I'm not 100% sure what I'm supposed to do... I think that I need to multiply (3/x-5 +1)by x-5 and add it to 1*x-5, then do the same for the bottom portion, so that I end up with (???)/x-5 over (???)/x-5, but I'm getting completely lost on how to finish solving this complex rational expression... can someone please help? Thank you guys very, very much in advance!!

simplify this complex rational equation:
3/(x-5) + 1 over 1- 4/(x-5)
--------------
[3/(x-5) +1] / [1 -4/(x-5)
= [(3+x-5)/(x-5)] / [(x-5-4)/(x-5)]
= [(x-2)/(x-5)]/[(x-9)/(x-5)]
= (x-2)/(x-9)
