Question 861068: Solve for k, give the equation of variation, and solve the problem.
The stopping distance "d" of a car after the brakes have been applied varies directly as the square of the speed "r" if a car traveling 60 mph can stop in 200 feet, how fast can a car travel and still stop in 72 feet?

Hi,
Let k represent the constant of the direct variation
D = kr^2
2000/60^2 = k = .56
d = .56r^2
= 11.3mph
