A polynomial is Xa so long as a>1
So X2 is a polynomial of the second degree, X3 of the third degree, and so on.
X12-5X4 is a 12th degree polynomial (The highest polynomial counts)

The degree is the same as the biggest exponent. So this is a degree 12 polynomial.
