i believe that's the associative property.

a + (b + c) is equal to (a + b) + c

the parentheses determines the order in which the variables are calculated.

an example:

5 + (2 + 3) is equal to (5 + 2) + 3

on the left you do the 2 + 3 first to get 5 + 5 which is equal to 10.

on the right you do (5 + 2) first to get 7 + 3 = 10.

you get 10 either way.
