Which of the following is not a polynomial?
A)4x to the third power +5x-1
B)2x-1/4
C)3xyto the second power + xy
D)24
If I figured right A)=a trinomial, B)= is not a polynomial, C)=a binomial, and D)=does not give me enough information to figure it out.So would my answer be B) or C). I can only choose one answer?
Answer by scott8148(6628) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
the "poly" prefix means multiple or many (like polygon) ... it refers to the number of "terms" in an expression
like you said, A is TRInomial; B and C are both BInomials; and D is a MOnomial (I guess mononomial is too alliterative)
D is the only one that isn't "poly"
terms are summed (some may be negative) to make up a polynomial, so the terms are separated by plus or minus signs
2x-y+3z is a TRInomial ... 3y-2x+y is really a BInomial because the two y terms can be combined into 2y-2x
