Supply = Demand
1.8 Trillion = Demand
Multiply both sides of the given equation by the reciprocal of 3/4, which is 4/3.
Demand = 2.4 Trillion tons.

Freeport McMoran projects that in 2010 world grain supply will be 1.8 trillion metric tons and the supply will be only 3/4 of the world grain demand. What will world grain demand be in 2010?
---------------
Let world demand in 2010 be "x".
EQUATION:
(3/4)x = 1.8 trillion metric tons
x = (4/3)1.8 trillion metric tons
x = 2.4 trillion metric tons

Let the world grain demand in 2010 be x trillion metric tons
So the supply = (3/4)x
But the supply is given to be 1.8 trillion metric tons
==> (3/4)x = 1.8
==> x = 1.8 * (4/3) [multiplying by (4/3) on both the sides]
==> x = 2.4
Thus the world grain demand in 2010 = 2.4 trillion metric tons
