at 8 am the smiths left a campground, driving at 48 mi/h. at 8:20 am the garcias left the same campground and fallowed the same route, driving at 60 mi/h. at what time did they overtake the smiths??
-----------------
Smith DATA:
Rate=48 mph ; time= x hrs ;distance=48x miles
--------------
Garcia DATA:
Rate=60 mph ; time= x-(1/3) hrs; distance=60(x-(1/3)) miles
=====================
EQUATION:
distance = distance
48x=60(x-(1/3))
48x=60x-20
12x=20
x=5/3 hrs
x= 1 hr 40 min
Garcia overtook Smith at 9:40 am
===============
