You need to first find a common denominator;
(6/y-4)-(1/y+1)
common denominator is (y-4)(y+1)
multiply the 6 by (y+1), then multiply the 1 by (y-4)
this gives:
6y +6 - y + 4
combine like terms to get the answer:
5y + 10
