Question 75745: Remove the parentheses in each of the following expressions and simplify when possible.
8d – (-7c -2d)

Answer by bucky(2189)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Simplify:
.
8d – (-7c -2d)
.
The rule is that if a set of parentheses is preceded by a minus sign, you can remove the
parentheses and the minus sign by changing the signs of the terms inside the parentheses.
.
In this problem, when you erase the minus sign in front of the parentheses and then remove
parentheses you must change the signs of -7c and -2d. The problem is then reduced to:
.
8d + 7c + 2d
.
Note that the 2d and the 8d can be added to reduce the problem to:
.
10d + 7c
.
or if your teacher prefers the variables to be in alphabetical order the problem can also
be written as:
.
7c + 10d
.
but that is only a matter of preference. 10d + 7c is just as correct.
.
Hope this helps you understand how to get rid of parentheses if they are preceded by
a negative sign.
