Question 74459:
This was on my test, I need to correct it but can't figure it out.
The sum of two numbers is 52. If the larger is divided by the smaller, the quotient is 9, and the remainder is 2. Find the numbers by setting up a rational equation.
Answer by uma(370) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Let the numbers be x and y
Then x + y = 52
Let x be the larger of the two numbers.
When the larger is divided by the smaller, the quotient is 9 and the remainder is 2.
==> x = 9y + 2
PLugging in this value of x in the first equation we have,
9y + 2 + y = 52
==> 10y + 2 = 52
==> 10y = 52 - 2 [subtracting 2 from both the sides]
==> 10y = 50
==> y = 50/10
==> y = 5
So x = 9y + 2
= 9*5 + 2
= 45 + 2
= 47
So the numbers are 47 and 5.
Good Luck!!!
