Don't know what they are teaching you but what you have so far is the wrong approach.
When you see an equation that has two unknowns and both sqrt terms are perfect squares try the following:
16x^2+40xy+25y^2 find the square roots of the first & last terms and see if they are the correct factors thus:
(4x+5y)(4x+5y)
