Multiplying would require applying the distributive property, twice.
The result is the sum of all the possible products of a term from (x+y) times a term from (a+b+c+d). All those terems are different, so there will be no repeat products (For example, ax will appear only once in that sum).
Because there are 2 choices for the term from (x+y) and 4 choices for the term from (a+b+c+d), the number of possible products is
