This is what I found: am I correct: GCF expression divided by GCF was
16x 3 (3x^2-1) GCF is equal to 2^

or am I totally off base and going in the wrong direction? If I am PLEASE get me on the right track.

Factor out the GREATEST common factor from the expression:
48x^5-16x^3

What you did is correct, but GCF should refer to more than one expression.
That's what common means, something is common to more than one.
This problem should say "Factor 48x^5-16x^3"

Actually, the GCF of 48x^5-16x^3 is 48x^5-16x^3.
