Question 598991: I dont understand what I am doing wrong, as I am off by a number or a value, or my factors are backwards, which I didn't think really mattered. UGH ! ! ! I refer to myself as a "MATH IDIOT" and am in need of a response from someone who can explain each step as they go, as just providing me with shortcuts and an answer is not going to help me on my upcoming final. This is my last class before applying to the RN program, and I desperately need to understand what it is that I am doing wrong. I have watched many YouTube videos, referenced "Algebra for Idiots" and "Algebra for Dummies" and the "Humongous Book of Algebra Problems Solved" and I am such a math illiterate, that I just don't see where my mistake is :) Thank you for your response :) I am getting 1/2 of the answer correct, while the other part of the equation is supposed to be an (m-a number) or (m+a number) and instead I am writing the second number, as a number, and the sum of two terms to make that number. Again, thank you so much for your help.
4m^2-18m+14
15m^3+24m^2+9m
15m^2-10m-25
50m^3-2m
3m^2-10m+8
60m^3+54m^2-6m

You didn't say what you want to do with these.
Factor them?
What do you mean by "backwards?"
---------------
4m^2-18m+14
All the coefficients are even, 2 is a factor.
= 2*(2m^2 - 9m + 7)
It will have to be (m + ??)*(2m + ??), or
(m + a)*(2m + b)
a & b have to be 1 & 7, the only factors of 7.
The product a*b is positive, so a & b have the same sign.
The m term is negative, so a & b are negative.
-----
Only 2 possibilities:
(m - 1)*(2m - 7) or (m - 7)*(2m - 1)
------
--> 2(m - 1)(2m - 7)
========================
15m^3+24m^2+9m
All coeff's divisible by 3
-------------
15m^2-10m-25 *** Factor of 5
------
50m^3-2m *** Factor of 2m
------
3m^2-10m+8
Similar to the first one.
------
60m^3+54m^2-6m *** Factor of 6m
