i's are a no-no in the denominator ___ clear them by multiplying by the complex conjugate (top and bottom)

[(5 + i) / (-4 - 6i)] * [(-4 + 6i) / (-4 + 6i)] = (-20 + 30i - 4i + 6i^2) / (16 - 24i + 24i - 36i^2)

you'll need to reduce this


the quantity divided by itself equals one, so the value of the fraction doesn't change
