Question 585333: These questions that are on Factoring Polynomials: ax squared plus bx plus c.
1.negative 6x squared minus x plus 2
2.negative ten x spuared plus 11x plus 6
Answer by Theo(13342) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
start with -6x^2 - x + 2 = 0
multiply both sides of this equation by -1 to get:
6x^2 + x - 2 = 0
factor this to get:
(2x-1)*(3x+2) = 0
solve for x to get:
x = 1/2 or x = -2/3
substitute in original equation to see if that works.
i confirmed that they're good.
if you multiply (2x-1) * (3x+2) you'll get:
6x^2 + 4x - 3x - 2 which simplifies to:
6x^2 + x - 2 which is set equal to 0 and then multiplied by -1 to get back to the original equation of:
-6x^2 - x + 2.
problem 2:
-10x^2 + 11x + 6
set it equal to 0 to get:
-10x^2 + 11x + 6 = 0
multiply both sides of the equation by -1 to get:
10x^2 - 11x - 6 = 0
multiplying by -1 gets the first term to be positive which makes factoring a lot easier.
equation to factor is now:
10x^2 - 11x - 6 = 0
multiplying both sides of the equation by -1 does not change the equality.
factors for this are:
(5x+2) * (2x-3)
this results in:
x = -2/5 or x = 3/2
answers have been substituted in the original equation and confirmed as good.
if you need an explanation as to how this was done, let me know but i don't have time to do it now.
earliest i'll be able to get back to you would be tomorrow morning.
