Question 557610: I have worked most of this problem myself, but I am a little confused on finding what percent the increase is on the 1970 sales. This is due today, and I would greatly appreciate your assistance. Thank you!
According to the Office of Management and Budget, in 1970 the U.S. government spent $82,000,000,000 for defense. In 2007, spending for defense was$ 495,000,000,000.
Write the 1970 and 2007 defense budgets in scientific notation.
$82,000,000,000=8.2*〖10〗^10
$495,000,000,000=4.95*〖10〗^11
You can find the percent of increase in the defense budget from 1970 to 2007 by following these steps:

Find the increase in sales from 1970 to 2007.
495,000,000,000-82,000,000,000=413,000,000,000
Write this answer in scientific notation.
413,000,000,000=4.13*〖10〗^11
Find what percent that increase is of the 1970 sales. Show the work for this part by using the numbers in scientific notation.
Round your answer to the nearest hundredth percent.

I'm going to ignore the "billions" part for now and assume every number is in billions (eg: when i say 16, i mean 16 billion)

Percent Increase = 100* [ (New Amount - Old Amount)/(Old Amount) ]

Percent Increase = 100* [ (495-82)/(82) ]

Percent Increase = 100*413/82

Percent Increase = 100*5.036585

Percent Increase = 503.6585%

So the percent increase is 503.6585%
