Question 53704: I'm attempting to solve:
4/5 x - 2/3 = 3x + 1 /2
I came up with an answer of -5/3, but it doesn't check properly.
I came up with - 5/3 by multiplying both sides by 30, that left me with 24x - 20 = 45x + 15, subtracted 20 from sides and then subtracted 45x from both sides and was left with -21x = 35. Divided both sides by -21 and got - 35/21, which simplifies to - 5/3. However, when I attempt to check the problem by plugging in that answer it is incorrect.
Any help here would be great!

Answer by stanbon(75887)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
(4/5) x - (2/3) = 3x + (1/2)
Multiply thru by 30 to get:
24x - 20 = 90x +15
66x=-35
x=-35/66
This answer checks out.

Comment:
It may be that your original problem
is really the following:
(4/5)x-(2/3) = (3x+1)/2
If you are given an answer for your problem
and it is not -35/66 you might try solving
this alternate form of your problem.
