A diver jumps off a 20 foot high diving board with an initial upward velocity of 4 feet per second. Use the vertical motion model n= -16t^2+ vt+ s.
A. Use the information above to model the vertical motion of the diver.
n= -16t^2+ vt+ s
here,
'v' is the initial velocity (4 ft/sec)
's' is the initial height (20 ft)
giving you
h= -16t^2+ 4t+ 20
.
B. Find the solution by factoring the model you found in part (a).
0= -16t^2+ 4t+ 20
0= -4t^2+ t+ 5
0= 4t^2- t- 5
0= (4t-5)(t+1)
t = {5/4, -1}
.
C. Explain why only one of the solutions is reasonable.
since t represents 'time' a negative value doesn't make sense (can't have -1 seconds) therefore the only solution is 5/4 seconds
