Please show solution for the following problem: At a school bookstore, a ballpoint pen costs $0.28 and a notepad costs $0.23. What could you buy and spend exactly $0.74?
28 cents is an even number of cents, so the number of cents
spent for the pens will be even, and since the total 74 cents
is even, we must spend an even number of cents for the
notepads so it will add up to the even number of cents 74.
Since 23 is an odd number of cents, we must have an even number of
notepads so their cost will be an even number of cents. We
can't buy 4 notepads, for that would run over 74 cents, so we
must buy 2 notepads costing 46 cents, leaving 74-46 or 23 cents,
just enough for 1 ballpoint pen.
