Question 452516: I could really use help on this math problem. I am supposed to solve the equation b/4 + 1/b = -5/3 (b over 4 plus 1 over b equals -5 over 3). I can't tell what the common denominator would be, since they're all different. If you could please help me, I would really appreciate it. Thanks!!!
Answer by stanbon(75887) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
b/4 + 1/b = -5/3
----
Multiply thru by 12b to get:
---
(3b)b + 12 = (4b)(-5)
---
3b^2+12 = -20b
---
3b^2+20b+12 = 0
---
Use Inverse-FOIL to get:
3b^2 + 2b+18b + 12 = 0
b(3b+2) + 6(3b+2) = 0
---
(3b+2)(b+6) = 0
b = -2/3 or b = -6
