5x² + 5xy - 12x - 12y

No it is not prime:

Factor 5x out of the first two terms
Factor -12 out of the last two terms:

5x(x + y) - 12(x + y)

Factor (x + y) out of both terms:

(x + y)(5x - 12)

Factor by grouping
can you see the first two have a factor of 5 and the second two have a factor of 12?
5*(x^2+xy)-12(x+y)
wait you can factor out an x from the first group
5x*(x+y)-12(x+y)
I see a factor of x+y
(5x-12)*(x+y)
