Question 43132: I am attempting to assist my sister with homework, but I am unsure of what to do with this equation. Instructions state to divide polynomials using long division or synthetic division. Please help.
What should I do with the word "by"????

Answer by stanbon(75887)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
x^5 + 3x -7 by x^3 + 1
You are asked to divide x^5 + 3x -7
by x^3 + 1.
That process is rather hard to show on this site .
Set up the problem as you would any long-division problem.
Divide x^3 into x^5 to get x^2 as the 1st term of the quotient.
Multiply x^2 times (x^3+1)to get x^5+x^2
Subtract this from x^5+3x-7 to get -x^2+3x-7
Since dividing this by x^3+1 would lead to negative
exponents you are finished.
So the result of dividing is x^2; the remainder is -x^2+3x-7
Cheers,
Stan H.
