Im not quite sure how to factor trinomials of the type ax^2+bx+c and get the right answer.

Different quadratics are factored in different ways.
x^2-16 = (x+4)(x-4)
---
x^2+4x+4 = (x+2)^2
---
x^2+4x+5 can be factored with the quadratic formula.
