Question 42960: When dividing polynomials by synthetic division,
Example:
f^2 + 7f + 10 / f + 2
Is the answer: f^2 + 5f ?
Because I've looked at examples and the first term in the quotient would be one exponent less than the beginning one. Meaning in the answer of the example, instead of putting f^2, it's just f. I'm not sure if you understand what I mean, but if you could show me step by step how to write the quotient. Thank you!

Actually, you have an extra f on both terms, as I get on the result
When dividing and multiplying polynomials, a good rule of thumb is that you add the exponents for the multiply, and when dividing, you subtract (when the terms have the same variable, of course!). So, you could verify your result by multiplying , which is not our answer. When using the subtract rule, you easily get . Other than that, the rest is fine.
