(which can be done by moving the decimal point)



(8.28x10^6)+(6.17x10^5)= (82.8x10^5)+(6.17x10^5)= 88.97x10^5 = 8.897x10^6

OR

 (8.28x10^6)+(6.17x10^5)= (8.28x10^6)+(.617x10^6)= 8.897x10^6
