(2x^4+8x^3-3)-(2x^2-9x+9) distribute the (-) to all terms on the on the right
(2x^4+8x^3-3)[-(2x^2)-(-9x)+9(-)]
2x^4+8x^3-3-2x^2+9x-9 combine like terms
2x^4+8x^3-2x^2+9x-12
