Question 40850: How do I solve this word problem?
Dick and Anne took a trip to France. Their siutcases were weighed at the airport and the weight recorded was 39 kilograms. If 50 kilograms is equivalent to 110 pounds, how many pounds did their suitcases weigh? Round to the nearest pound.

Well we can do this with a proportion...that is
50 is to 110 as 39 is to x, or in algebra
50 / 110 = 39 / x
Now cross-multiply and solve
50x = 4290
x = 85.8 lbs
