Question 40844: Solve formula for variable – Statistics Example
The formula for the margin for the margin of error to establish a confidence interval has been
found mathematically to be:
where:
e = margin of error
z = critical value
s = sample standard deviation
n = sample size
Given known values for e, z, and s solve the margin of error formula n to determine sample size.

There are different margin of error formulas relating
to different population parameters.
If you are talking about the margin associated with
estimating the mean of a population
the margin of error is E=z(star)[s/sqrt(n)]
Solve this equation for n as follows:
sqrt(n)= z(star)[s/E]
Square both sides to get:

n=[z(star)s/E]^2
