SOLUTION: I am needing some help Please.
In solving the equation (x + 3)(x + 1) = 48, Eric stated that the solution would be
x + 3 = 48 => x = 45
or
(x + 1) = 48 => x = 47

Question 408266: I am needing some help Please.
In solving the equation (x + 3)(x + 1) = 48, Eric stated that the solution would be
x + 3 = 48 => x = 45
or
(x + 1) = 48 => x = 47
However, at least one of these solutions fails to work when substituted back into the original equation. Why is that? Please help Eric to understand better; solve the problem yourself, and explain your reasoning. Please show all work.

I don't know where you get these problems from, but I solved a very similar problem yesterday (involving the same step, including a person named Eric. Different coefficients, though). Here's a link to the solution I posted:

I don't think that Eric knows the "zero property rule" cannot be applied in a similar manner to other numbers :)
