Anna went to the grocery store. she bought 3 oranges and 6 apples. she paid $4.50. Maria went to the same store and bough 2 oranges and 2 apples. Her cost was $2.10. How much would 1 apple cost?
Let price of oranges be "r".
Let price of apples be "a".
EQUATION:
1st) 3r+6a=450 cents
2nd) 2r+2a=210 cents
Multiply the 2nd by 3 and subtract from 1st to get:
-3r=-180
r=60 cents (price per orange)
Substitute into the 1st to get:
3(60)+6a=450
180+6a=450
6a=270
a=45 cents(price per apple)

Stan H.
