Question 3747:
(y-3)^2 8y-24
_______ Divide _______
8 64

I know this looks funny but you take (y-3)squared divided by 8 and then there is a division sign in the middle of that and 8y-24 divided by 64. Hope that helps.
All I would like to know is how to do this problem. Thanks.

Answer by longjonsilver(2297)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
strictly, you cannot divide fractions, but what you can do it turn the second fraction over and then multiply instead:

the 64's and the y-3 cancel themselves (NOTE: if this was all equal to something, I would not cancel the y-3 terms, as that would lose you some information and hence a possible solution. But here, we are just simplyfying the big fraction. We get (y-3) as the final solution.
