Question 363504: What is the correct expression for this word problem? I think it should be the product of two binomials but I am not sure how to set it up. I believe the first binomial should be (x+6)( ? ) not sure about the second.
The length of a rectangle is 6 meters more than its width. If the area is 40 square meters, what are the length and width? Thanks!! This site has helped me tremendously. I am awful with word problems

Yes!

Letting x represent the 'width' and (x +6) represent the length, is the correct set up



Following thru: A = l*w for a rectangle

(x+6)x = 40m^2

x^2 + 6x - 40m^2 =0

factoring

(x+10)(x-4)=0

x = -10 cannot use this solution

x = 4m

width is 4m and the length is 10m
