6x + 2y is a monomial because the degree of this expression is <= 1;
Any expression having a degree of 1 or zero(constant) is defined as a monomial;
Binomials are when the degree is two, while trinomial expressions have degree 3
All expressions fit under the parent Polynomials;
So, 6x + 2y polynomial is actually a monomial.

6x+2y is a binomial (that is, has 2 terms). More accurately, it is a bivariate binomial of degree 1. A monomial is any polynomial with only 1 term, a binomial is a polynomial with 2 terms, trinomial 3 terms, etc. The polynomial , for example, is a trinomial in 3 variables of degree 5 (The highest sum of the powers appearing in any term of the polynomial.)
