Answer by Theo(13342) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
2x^2 + 3x^2 = 5x^2
2x^2 * 3x^2 = 6x^2
in both cases you are using the distributive law to break out the common factor.
2x^2 + 3x^2 = (2 + 3) * x^2 = 5x^2
2x^2 * 3x^2 = (2 * 3) * x^2 = 6x^2
you always solve the expression from the inner set of parentheses first.
in the first case, the expression in the inner set of parentheses is an addition.
in the second case, the expression in the inner set of parentheses is a multiplication.
that appears to be the difference.
it makes sense because the laws of algebraic and arithmetic operations are being followed in both cases.
