Question 34465: A guy wire of length 50ft is attached to the ground and to the top of an antenna. The height of the antenna is 10 ft larger than the distance from the base of the antenna to the point where the guy wire is attached to the ground. What is the height of the angenna?

Draw the picture.
Let the base distance be "x"; then the antenna height is "x+10"
Use Pythagoras to get the equation:
EQUATION:
base^2 + antenna^2 = 50^2
x^2 + (x+10)^2 = 2500
2x^2+20x-2400=0
(x-30)(x+40)=0
x=30 (length of base)
x+10= 40 ft ( height of antenna)
