Maria and Charlie can deliver 42 papers in 3 hours. How long would it take them to deliver 49 papers?
Here's how I worked it: DO i DIVIDED 42 / 3 THEN MULTIPLY THAT NUMBER BY 49? CONFUSED AND REALLY tired.
Answer by Theo(13342) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
maria and charlie can deliver 42 papers in 3 hours.
how long would it take them to deliver 49 papers?
for this type of problem you would want to know how many hours per paper.
if they can deliver 42 papers in 3 hours, then divide 3 hours by 42 to get .071428561 papers per hour.
multiply that by 49 and you get 3.5 hours.
if would take them 3 and 1/2 hours to deliver 49 papers.
what makes this problem different is that, normally, you are looking for a rate of how many papers per hour.
in this problem, you want to know how many hours per paper.
papers per hour would be number of papers divided by number of hours.
hours per paper would be number of hours divided by number of papers.
you could also have solved this by papers per hour.
42 papers in 3 hours becomes 42/3 = 14 papers per hour.
49 / 14 = 3.5 hours
If you're working with hours per paper, then you can confirm that the ratio is good by multiplying 42 (your original number) * .071428561 to get 3 hours.
If you're working with papers per hours, then you can confirm that the ratio is good by dividing 42 (your original number) by 14 to get 3 hours.
If you want to generalize the equations, you would do the following:
let p = number of papers
let h = number of hours.
papers per hour = p/h
hours per paper = h/p
number of papers times number of hours per paper becomes p * h/p which becomes h which is the number of hours.
number of papers divided by papers per hour becomes p / (p/h) which is the same as p * (h/p) which becomes h which is the number of hours.
it's a matter of what ratio you are using and how you apply it.
you will get the number of hours either way.
