Question 325012: I need to factor x^4-3x^3+8x^2-18x+12
Answer by stanbon(75887)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
factor x^4-3x^3+8x^2-18x+12
----
The coefficenents add up to zero, so x=1 is a root.
Therefore x-1 is one of the factors.
=======================================
Use synthetic division to find other Real roots:
1)....1....-3....8....-18....12
.......1.....-2...6.....-12...|..0
----
Quotient x^3 -2x^2 + 6x -12
---
I graphed it and found a Real zero at x = 2
---
2).........1.....-2...6.....-12
.............1.....0...6....|..0
Quotient: x^2 + 6
Factors (x+isqrt(6))(x-isqrt(6)(x-2)(x-1)
