An error in recording bank charges caused the computer
to mistakenly take $17 each month in charges
from Alison�s checking account for 9 months and $19
a month for the next 4 months. The error was corrected
after 13 months. How much did the bank owe

It sounds like the bank charges $17 per month for 9 months and $19 per month for 4 months which would make a total charge of 9*17 + 4*19 = 229.

If we assume the account had K dollars in it when this started, and nothing else was withdrawn, then the account would be deficient in the following manner.

K - ((9*17) + (4*19)) = K - 229

Since the bank withdrew 229 dollars out of the account that it shouldn't have, then it needs to add 229 back into the account to restore it back to its original balance which was K.
