Question 288376: I need to solve this radical equation using the power principle.
Problem:
I can work the other problems pretty easily, but they all have numbers before the x (ie , so I can understand them a little better.
This one is throwing me for a loop.
I tried,

and got

which gave me

so I moved the to the right side and came up with

then i subtracted the 4 from the right and moved it to the left to isolate my final radical and got

which came to
and then i squared each side again

and got
which is
Since there is no or a simple or something, I can't seem to figure out how I would do this problem. Either I messed up the steps somewhere or this problem is unsolvable. I'm pretty sure I just confused a step or missed one all together.
Please help? This is due on Tuesday and I still have another 34 problems (out of 118) left. Almost done!!

When you FOILed the right side, you should get
x + 7 =
:
x + 7 =
:
x - x + 7 + 5 =
:
12 =
:
Square both sides and you have
144 = 16(x-9)
Divide both sides by 16
9 = x - 9
9+9 = x
x = 18
