Question 252308: One root of mx^2 −10x + 3 = 0 is 2/3 of the other root. What is the sum of the roots?
Answer by drk(1908)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
The sum of the roots is related to aX^2 + bX + c = 0. The sum of roots is -b/a.
In our equation that is 10/m. This equal R(1) + R(2).
We are also told that R(1) = (2/3)R(2).
So, 10/m = 5R(2)/3 after substitution and addition.
5*2 = 10, so 3*2 = 6 = m.
The sum becomes 10/6 = 5/3.
