Question 241661: hi, my homework is asking me the following if x=2 and y=-3 i have to solve the following equation: x+y(x+y) no matter what i do, i can't seem to get to the answer which is supposedly 5 i have tried 2+-3(2+-3) in every possible way and come up with answers of +1, -1 but never 5! please help

Let's see if I can help you out. First, replace the letters with the numbers so it looks like this:
x=2 and y=-3 x+y(x+y)
2 + -3(2-3)= We always handle the parenthesis first so it would look like:
2-3(-1)= Now multiply to give us:(Note when you multiply two negatives it turns to positive)
2+3= Now add and we get:
5 is the answer.
