Just plug and chug.
d(x) = 8 + x - (x - 5)
d(x) = 8 + x - x + 5
d(x) = 13

Just collect like terms. And yes, it is ok to have a function definition that does not have a variable in it. It is called a constant function and the graph is a straight horizontal line.
