You and a friend decide to meet at a park.
You travel 2 miles further to get to the park than your friend.
Let your distance be "x+2"
Then you friend's distance is "x".

Three times the distance you travel is 12 miles.
Equation:
3(x+2) = 12 miles
x+2 = 4
x = 2 miles

How far did your friend travel to get to the park.
Friend's distance: x = 2 miles
