Answer by rapaljer(4671) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
3y^2 -y -30
(3y___)(y_____)
You need to find two numbers of opposite sign whose product is -30, so you can make the middle term come out to -1y.
Try this combination: (3y__10)(y__3)
If you make this first blank a "-" and the second blank a "+", then you will have the "outer times outer" come to +9y, and the "inner times inner" comes to -10y, like this, so the middle term will be -1y.
(3y-10)(y+3)
This is a difficult topic, especially if you are weak in regular trinomial factoring. You may want to see my own website for a complete explanation of Factoring Trinomials and Advanced Factoring of Trinomials.
To see my own website, you can do a "Bing" search for my last name "RAPALJE" and look for "Rapalje Homepage" which should be the first on the list. On my homepage, look for the link near the top of the page that says "Basic, Intermediate, and College Algebra: One Step at a Time". Choose "Basic Algebra" and look in "Chapter 2" for the sections on "Factoring Trinomials" and "Advanced Trinomial Factoring". It's my own explanation complete with examples and exercises (and answers of course!), explained for folks who are NOT good at math. Then see my "MATH IN LIVING COLOR" pages for additional solutions IN COLOR!
