The possible rational roots of a polynomial are all the possible combinations of the factors of the constant term (at the end) over the factors of the leading coefficient (the coefficient of the term with the highest exponent).

In your problem the contant term is -3. Its possible factors are -1 and 3 or 1 and -3.

The leading coefficient (the coefficient of the x^3 term) is 1. Its possible factors are: 1 and 1 or -1 and -1.

The possible rational roots of the polynomial are all the possbile combinations of {-1, 3, 1, -3} over {1, -1}:
-1/1 = -1
1-/-1 = 1
3/1 = 3
3/-1 = -3
The rest of the combinations simplify to one of the above. So the possible rational roots are: -1, 1, 3, -3.
