Question 193510: A rectangular garden has dimensions of 15 feet by 11 feet. A gravel path of uniform width is to be built around the garden. How wide can the path be if there is enough gravel for 192 square feet?

Answer by checkley77(12844)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
15*11+192=(15+2x)(11+2x)
165+192=165+22x+30x+4x^2
4x^2+52x-192=0
4(x^2+13x-48)=0
4(x+16)(x-3)=0
x-3=0
x=3 ft. is the width of the path.
Proof:
15*11+192=(15+6)(11+6)
165+192=21*17
357=357
