simplify using long division.
----------------------------
(x^3-1) / (x^2-1)
= [(x-1)(x^2+x+1)] / [(x-1)(x-2)]
= (x^2+x+1)/(x-2)
Now use long division or synthetic division:

.......1....3..|..7
Quotient: x+3
Remainder: 7
