Gene spent 10 minutes riding his bicycle to a friends house. He left his bike there and with a friend, walked 15 minutes to the gm. Gene rides his bicycle 10 km/hr faster than he walks. If the entire trip covered 2.75 km. how far is it from his friends house to the gym?

Bike DATA:
time = (1/6)hr ; rate = x+10 km/h ; distance = rt=(1/6)(x+10) km

Walk DATA:
time = (1/4)hr ; rate = x km/h ; distance = rt = (1/4)x km

Equation:
distance + distance = 2.75 km
(1/6)(x+10) + (1/4)x = 2.75
(1/6 + 1/4)x + (5/3) = 11/4
(5/12)x + (5/2) = 11/4
Multiply thru by 12 to get:
5x + 30 = 33
5x = 3
x = 3/5 km/h

That is the walking distance = (1/4)x
= (1/4)(3/5) = (3/20) km
