Question 173003: Hello all, I am asking for someone to please check this problem for me. I think I have done the steps right, but because this is my weakest subject, I am second guessing myself...
Multiply out:
(x +6)(x^3 - x^2 - 5x +1)
x.x^3 - x.x^2 - x.5x +1 + 6.x^3 - 6.x^2 - 30x +1 =
x^4 - x^3 - 5x^2 + 8x^3 - 6x^2 - 30x =
8x^3 - 30x
Is this correct?

Multiply out:
(x +6)(x^3 - x^2 - 5x +1)
x.x^3 - x.x^2 - x.5x +x.1 + 6.x^3 - 6.x^2 - 30x +6.1 =
x^4 - x^3 - 5x^2 + x + 6x^3 - 6x^2 - 30x + 6 =
x^4 + 5x^3 - 11x^2 - 29x + 6
===============================
The rule is "every term of x^3 - x^2 -5x +1 must be multiplied
by each term of x + 6

Thanks for trying...but it's not quite correct!
You got everything right in the first line except that, when you multiply x by 1 you should get x and not just 1, so your first line should read:
Now simplify this:
and, combining like-terms, you get...
